The Nigerian Army has achieved a major breakthrough in promoting peace

The Nigerian Army has achieved a major breakthrough in promoting peace, security, and stability across the 13 Brigade's Area of Responsibility, as no fewer than 80 militants voluntarily surrendered their arms and embraced the Cross River State Government's amnesty programme in Akpabuyo Local Government Area.

According to Major Yemi Sokoya, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, Headquarters 13 Brigade, Nigerian Army, said that this significant development occurred in the early hours of Friday, January 16, 2026, when fighters from two separate camps emerged from the creeks and handed themselves over at the Atimbo Rear Area under Operation OKWOK. The ex-militants also relinquished a substantial cache of weapons, including AK-47 rifles, pump-action guns, speedboats, explosives, and other military equipment.

The Commander of the 13 Brigade, Brigadier General P.O. Alimikhena, described the mass surrender as a key confidence-building milestone, highlighting the success of sustained military operations combined with strong civil-military collaboration and the state government's proactive peace initiatives. The former militants have since been handed over to the state's Rapid Response Team for profiling and reintegration processes.
